The Official NASA Task Load Index (TLX) App, widely recognized as the standard for measuring subjective workload in various fields, allows researchers to easily evaluate operators working with different human-machine interface systems.
Utilizing a multi-dimensional rating system, the NASA TLX determines an overall workload score by aggregating ratings from six sub-scales:
- Mental Demand
- Physical Demand
- Temporal Demand
- Performance
- Effort
- Frustration
Originally created as a manual questionnaire by Sandra Hart at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) in the 1980s, the NASA TLX serves as the standard against which the effectiveness of other metrics, concepts, or models is measured. It has been effectively utilized worldwide to assess workload in diverse settings such as aircraft cockpits, command and control workstations, supervisory roles, simulations, and laboratory experiments.
The iOS version of the NASA TLX app significantly expands its reach and usability within the research and development community, enabling mobile and contextual assessments. This includes on-the-go evaluations like in an aircraft cockpit during or post-flight, rather than being limited to a desktop setting. The app offers several key benefits for both researchers and participants:
- Privacy: The NASA TLX prioritizes participant data privacy by anonymizing all results and avoiding the transmission of personal identifiable information (PII) to external servers.
- Location Flexibility: The app can function offline, empowering researchers to conduct evaluations outside traditional office environments. Data is computed on the device and can later be securely uploaded for analysis once a network connection is established.
- Simple Study Setup: Researchers can expedite study creation by scanning a pre-generated QR code within the app. This feature automatically populates essential study details, minimizing manual data entry.
